Anak Nakal surges to win Pennsylvania Derby

Horseracing Betting Lines

09/01/2008 - Bensalem, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Anak Nakal, ridden by Joe Bravo, rallied down the stretch to capture Monday's 29th running of the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby at Philadelphia Park. It was the first win of the year for the three- year-old.

Part of the hefty Nick Zito stable of three-year-olds, Anak Nakal settled far off the pace in the 1 1/8 mile event. The early pace was set by Wishful Tomcat and Two Step Salsa, the second pick behind Smooth Air.

The top two runners took the 13-horse field into the far turn as Anak Nakal began his move from the back of the pack. On the turn for home Two Step Salsa had a short lead as Acai rallied on the outside.

At the top of the stretch Bravo drove his mount down the middle of the track to catch Acai just before the wire. Anak Nakal registered a neck victory over Acai with 4-1 favorite Smooth Air holding on for third.

Stones River was fourth followed by Atoned, Two Step Salsa, Tiz Now Tiz Then, You and I Forever, Alaazo, Only for Now, Ready Set, Numaany and Wishful Tomcat. Power Game was scratched.

The time for the PA Derby was 1:48.99 on a fast track.

Anak Nakal, owned by Four Roses Thoroughbreds, had been a disappointment this year. In 2007 as a two-year-old the colt won his first start and then was runner-up in the Nashua Stakes at Aqueduct. He closed the season by winning the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs.

As a Kentucky Derby hopeful in 2008, Anak Nakal was eighth in the Fountain of Youth, seventh in the Rebel Stakes and fifth in the Wood Memorial. He rallied for a seventh-place result in the Run for the Roses.

He redeemed himself with a third-place finish in the Belmont Stakes, but was fifth at Saratoga in the Jim Dandy Stakes.

The Labor Day victory was worth $600,000 and is the third career win in 10 starts for Anak Nakal. He has career earnings of $943,416.

This was Joe Bravo's third PA Derby triumph. The former Philadelphia Park regular also won in 1994 with Meadow Flight and in 2003 aboard Grand Hombre.

Anak Nakal returned $34.60, $15.00 and $8.60. Acai paid $10.40 and $6.20, and Smooth Air paid $4.60 to show.

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.

Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.

El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.

MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds

Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.

New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.

Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
