09/02/2008 - Sunrise, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Bryan McCabe's stay in Toronto has officially come to an end. The Florida Panthers acquired the veteran defenseman along with a fourth-round pick in 2010 from the Maple Leafs on Tuesday.
Heading to Toronto will be defenseman Mike Van Ryn.
"We are very pleased to have acquired a player with Bryan's talent level and playing experience," said Panthers general manager Jacques Martin. "Bryan is a big, strong, hard-hitting defenseman who also possesses the ability to be a goal scorer and play on special teams. He will be counted on to play an integral role on our defense."
McCabe, 33, signed a five-year, $29 million contract with the Maple Leafs in 2006. He endured an injury-plagued campaign last season, posting five goals and 23 points in 54 games. The veteran rearguard missed 22 games with a broken hand.
Van Ryn's 2007-08 season was limited to 20 games due to injury, during which he posted only two assists. The former 26th overall pick in 1998 of the Devils has recorded 27 goals and 118 points in 326 NHL games over seven seasons with St. Louis and Florida.
The deal is part of the Maple Leafs' radical revamping of their roster in the off-season after the club failed to make the playoffs for the third consecutive year.
A second-round pick (40th overall) of the New York Islanders in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, McCabe has registered 115 goals and 418 points in 917 career games with the Islanders, Canucks, Blackhawks and Maple Leafs.
